In continuing with my lessons learned series, this one is of a more personal nature, but relates to a corporate job and personal life.
Know the difference between a Plan and a Goal
A plan is a series of actions and steps to take to achieve a goal. A goal is a desired state of existence that people set for themselves.
A plan is a tactical means to achieving a vision, which is represented by a goal.
Having a plan without a goal or a goal without a plan is not productive. You cannot have one without another. If you have a plan and no goal, then anything you do could be counterproductive to your goal once one materializes. Conducting tactical steps without working towards a vision is a waste of time and energy. Conversely, if you don’t have a plan to achieve your goals, then all they will ever be is a vision that is unattainable.
Balance your Plans and your Goals
Living your life by a plan can be positive, if you have a clear goal. However, keep in mind that a plan should be flexible and change. Never follow a plan to the letter and fail to change or alter it as you go because it will ultimately ensure that you miss your goal.
Change is constant. As a result, in order to achieve your goals, you may have to change your tactics in mid-execution.
Always keep your goal in mind when changing or formulating plans to reach them
